December 1st Challenge

I love December, and am so happy that it’s here already! A little nervous that I still have a pretty big Christmas shopping list to make a dent in, but happy all the same! Here’s the first December challenge for you to get stuck into. Remember, you don’t have to use all 3 parts, but you get extra brownie points if you do!

  1. Your layout should be based on the theme of childhood – it can be your own or someone elses.
  2. Use a frame of some kind in the design of your layout
  3. Use layers – can be paper, ribbon, whatever you like, but layer it up!

Now we have a little dose of inspiration for you. I’m so excited to share that our very special guest for December, all the way from beautiful Norway, is the amazingly talented Ingvild Bolme!

Childhood. I really wanted to do a picture of me as a kiddo, but then I saw this picture of my crazy, adorable Sophia!! She’s my younger, carefree daughter who loves life and all that comes in it . .. except when her older sis is giving her trouble!!  After finding the picture, I had to figure out what to use for a frame . . . the papers that I used are some old Sassafrass Lass that I got on clearance at one of my local scrap stores!! The great thing . . . they happen to have funky edging on the bottom . . . so I lopped that off the bottom of two different pieces of paper and created the frame. At first, I was going to use the circles with the buttons as flowers, but there appeared to be something missing so I just added them to the frame as well as the buttons!   I happened to come across the perfect Pink Paislee rub-ons and letters that complimented the layout beautifully!  I added the 3 brads on either side for an extra design element and then quickly jotted down some journaling! Layout complete!!  My layers comes in the different papers that I used as well as some cleverly placed pop dots!! Enjoy this challenge!!

The childhood theme I chose is PLAY- every child loves to play, it just seemed to fit.
I love layering, most of the time it’s paper. For this challenge, I changed it and layered my rub-ons.
I layered rub-ons over each other and also layered them on the photo. I layered the chipboard title over the rub-ons as well.
I created 2 frames on my layout. One with the background paper and another with black rub-ons around my 2 larger photos.

I knew I wanted to scrap a layout about what my childhood was like and how different it is to my children’s experience at the moment.  I framed the scanned photo with stitching and with patterned paper.  I cut a circle from the cardstock with my Fiskars circle cutter and placed lined paper behind it for the journaling.  I used ribbon to frame the journaling spot too, which took quite a lot of glossy accents!  And last of all, I drew a distressed border around the whole layout to frame the whole thing.  I love to layer up my layouts anyway, so this was great fun for me.  I think with the cut out journaling spot, I can claim about 7 layers!

My hubby bought some boxes of old snap shots down from the attic last week. It’s been lovely going through them all and revisiting some old memories. I love this photo of Louis, it’s by no means a perfect photo but it instantly made me remember how he felt once bathed and ready for bed. That baby smell, they way he felt so clean, soft and cuddly and just the feel of the Gap Baby gro is something I will never forget. All this came back from just this one photo.
I’ve framed the photo itself using acrylic paint and then added another frame by adding the circle around my baby to really draw attention to him and used this to then journal on.
The layering is one of my favourite technics and something I tend to do all the time. I love layers. I love the extra dimension they add, the texture and the interest it adds too. I’ve cut up patterned papers, added stickers, a journal tag, tickets, a paper frill and primas. Lots and lots of layers.

For this challenge, I layered tons of October Afternoon paper to give my page a ‘country’ effect.Using my sewing machine, I stiched around my paper edges, and then used sandpaper to rough the pattern papers up a bit.  For the frame, I trimmed down a piece of cardboard from a box I had gotten in the mail, and then pulled the top layer off to expose the cardboard ridges.
