September 1st challenge

We have a big challenge for you this time! Are you ready?! Here we go:

1. Focus your layout on something from your daily routine. This can be a whole day, or just one item you use or someone you see every day.
2. You can journal as much or as little as you like, but you should answer the following questions within it: “who or what?”; “when?”; “where?”; and “why?”.
3. You can use no “bought” patterned paper – you must make your own patterned paper! Paint it, stamp it, or do something else creative!

Our special guest – Céline Navarro

today2

Céline Navarro is a 28-year-old self-taught artist living in Montpellier, southern France.

She is a Designer for American Crafts, Pink Paislee, Kesi’art, Hambly, Kits de Somni and Sassafras.

She would describe her style as funky, fresh, colorful, sometimes crazy, sometimes melancholic, sometimes full of poetry. She hates rules in scrapbooking, but maybe that’s because she comes from the Mixed Media world.

Céline has been published in Somerset Studios, Legacy, Scrapbook Answers, The Stamper’s Sampler, and publications such as The ATC book by Stampington, Lifelines, In This House, A new Approach to ATC’s, Somerset Home, The Heart of Design…

She has travelled the world to teach scrapbook classes, especially in France, Australia, Singapore, the US, Canada, Brazil, South Africa and much more to come.

She has released her own Scrapbook magazine in France, called {entreARTistes}magazine and organizes big scrapbook events with her fellow scrapbook friend Karine Cazenave-Tapie.

Here is the layout she created for our 1st September challenge:

Thanks, Céline, for sharing your awesome work with us! She will be back with another layout on 16th!

Here’s what I did with the challenge:

no bad dreams

I used a cork from a wine bottle to stamp cream acrylic paint over the orange background cardstock. I then “reversed” the pattern by lightly painting a page from and old “Home Improvements” book with cream paint and stamping a polka dot pattern with Spiced Marmalade distress ink.

no bad dreams close

To make my embellishment I used watercolour pencils to make some “lined” paper, and punched a scalloped circle out of it. I layered a journaling sticker on top and then punched a smaller circle from scrap paper that I coloured with distress ink. I then hand cut a tiny cloud to finish it off, to symbolise the sun going down and the start of night time which is the subject of my page.

My journaling reads:
Every night before bed, we have to snuggle on my bed and say to each other “No bad dreams for [insert full name here, including middle names] tonight”. I have to say it after you have said it to me, otherwise you are convinced you will still have nightmares. This is our little tradition. When I was a little girl, my mum used to say the same thing to me before bed. I don’t know if it works, but you won’t rest until we’ve said it!

My Daily Grind

I’ve had so much fun creating this LO. I just loved this challenge.
Making my own background paper really set my head spinning with ideas.
I ended up with the whole lot coming together around my morning latte.
My pp was made by sticking strips of the daily newspaper down. I’ve then painted gesso over the top and then once dry painted coffee over and added some coffee cup rings.

My Daily Grind - close up

My journaling reads:
This is what I look forward to when I wake up every morning. My homemade costa coffee latte.
I just can’t live without it.

The layout tells about the wedding books that i’m always working on, they’re part of my daily routine.  I’ve used lots of lace on the background and some pieces of a wedding invitation.
This is a cool and easy way to add color and texture without using patterned papers.

I punched holes with my paper punch, then placed cardstock in the back to be peeping through the holes. It reminded me of the sprinkes on the poptarts.

daily routine

I loved the challenge of making my own patterned paper and try to make the most of it!! I started with a green cardstock which I stamped in places with a grid stamp and blue ink. Then I prepped up my white cardstock by spraying over magic mesh yellow and fuchsia glimmer mist (photo of detail 2) and distressed and inked all around its edges.

details 2

Top left paper is newspaper painted with acrylics. Top right paper is paper bag which I crimpled and then distressed with ink. Middle left paper is a stamped flower pattern with black stazon and then with a water-pen and inks I have painted the blooms and the leaves. Middle right paper is red cardstock stamped with acrylic white paint using a bottle cap! The polka dotted paper is made out of an old phone directory page stamped with fuchsia ink! Bottom left paper is cardstock stamped with acrylic white paint. Bottom right paper was prepped with gesso and then painted and stamped with acrylics!

my perfect start_complete

For my LO- I created my own background paper with tape and glimmer mist.
First I took my textured cardstock and taped some “stripes”
Then I used my glimmer mist and sprayed all over the page.
I started with Tiger Lily (orange). I gave it a few minutes to dry and gave it another light coat.
After it dried, I sprayed over the cardstock again, this time with Lemon Zest (yellow).
I let the paper dry for about five more minutes and pulled the tape off. My paper did rip in a few spots, but for me it added more distress but for better lines/stripes use painters tape, it’s not as sticky.

About Nat

Hello hello!! I am Natalie (please call me Nat) I am from Scotland but having been living in England for 4 years now and have spent the last two years in Derby which is where it looks like i’m going to be staying (thanks J!!). I have a lovely partner and a beautiful little boy who is 3. We have just bought a house together which has my very own craft room (WOOOOOO!) of which i want to scrap on the wall!! I am 27, a full time chemistry teacher and have been addicted to scrapbooking for a year now!

My favourite companies at the moment are American Crafts, October Afternoon, Jillibean Soup and anything that has cute cherries on it or anything that i look at and think…oh my god i have to have it (you know that feeling..don’t you?) I am obsessed with alphabets and have started to make my own little felt embellies!

My blog is http://njmacs.blogspot.com/

I am absolutely thrilled to be part of this exciting venture on The Studio so thank you Amanda for making me Guest Designer this month!!

Here is Nat’s take on the challenge:

gLO1

I cut a pizza box to 12 x 12.  I wanted it to look like a desk so i stained it with coffee (yes, it smells! I sealed it with pva and water so it won’t go mouldy). Made coffee cup rings out of very strong coffee and graffittied (sp?) on it using Biro and Masking – now it looks like an authentic desk.

For the booklet i used Kraft Cardstock and folded it to size. Folded white cardstock and stitched them together using scrap twine.  I used a Dymo for the titles of the journaling. Got T to put his hand print, used Bella Cork Borders and Queen & Co Felt “Boy” and ordinary notebook paper to journal on.

gLO2

I went into work last week and i based this layout on the state of my desk and the fact that there are files from the exam board everywhere. Obviously the graffitti is much different (use your imagination!!).  The who, what, where, when, why, gave me the idea of interrogation and police files so i tried to make the journalling into a suspect file.

Thank you for having me guest on this amazing team!!
