October 16th Challenge
We’ve made a little change to the rules so that it is easier for those of you with limited scrappy time to join in! We usually ask that you use all 3 parts of the challenge in your layout to enter, but we decided that some of you simply don’t have time for that! So from now on you can use as many (or as few) as you’d like. We’d love it if you use all 3, but you don’t have to! So here’s the challenge!
- You must use (at least) 1 new and 1 old sheet of patterned paper on your layout.
- Use glimmer mist or a technique to get a similar effect on your layout.
- The subject of your layout must be YOU!
This month we are proudly sponsored by Nikki Sivils, Scrapbooker LLC and were lucky enough to get a chance to play with one of Nikki’s new paper lines, Victoria’s Street - we used them in the last challenge and here they are again for the 2nd October challenge!
I’m sure you remember that Nikki is also our Special Guest designer this month! Here’s her fabulous layout:
I used Glimmer Mist on the edges of the pink paper (JBS) only, the old paper is Jenni Bowlins from 2007 along with my new paper line “My Sweet Cherry Pie”. Everything is mime or Jenni Bowlin’s products, except Glimmer Mist, Making Memories Shimmer Alpha, and DMC Embroidery floss. I had so much fun creating this layout!! Thanks for letting me play along with all of you!!
And now here are the DT layouts to inspire you to get your scrap on! They’ve really outdone themselves this time!
Amanda Jones
I used an old piece of Making Memories paper as my background, and the new paper is the Nikki Sivils paper. I used a piece of die cut cardstock as the background for all of my elements and used glimmer mists to create a shimmery colourful effect.
I cut out some of the cute paper designs to create a little house “scene” to illustrate my love for my home, and wrote my journaling in wavy lines above it to add some interest. The scalloped borders were also cut from the paper and misted to coordinate with the rest of the page.
Lisa Saunders
My old piece of paper is from October Afternoon which I’ve had leftover from a kit for quite some time now. I felt it really worked with Nikki’s home themed papers which were my ‘new’ papers I used for this challenge.
I’ve sprayed with 3 different mists.

For my layout, I focused on layering.
For the first “layer” I used a masking technique with my Glimmer Mist.
I used some scallop edge scraps that I had left from my Nikki Sivils paper.
I just placed them down and sprayed over the top. Remove the “mask” and let dry.
**When using the Glimmer Mist, be sure to cover up your table with newspaper**
My next layers are paper.
I used my “old” paper as layers (3 different papers) and added some hand cut accents on top of that.
Next I layered rub-ons and a little doodling.
Lastly, my title and journaling.
Do not be afraid to layer things. If something does not turn out the way you expected it too, cover it up with another layer.
Elina Koutsouradi
I have scrapped about my love of baking. I may not be a good cook but I certainly know how to make yummy deserts!! I have glimmer misted with “lemon meringue” my white cardstock and then played with a “tilted”grid for my journaling!!
Melissa Priest
I created this layout, using techniques that any beginner scrapper can
master! Use a brown cardstock base, I used old and new pattern papers
to build layers. For my technique, I used a mini mister and gently
sprayed alcohol ink on my kraft cardstock. I wanted a gentle splatter
effect, so I stood far away from my paper while I sprayed. I love the
easy effect it gave! For my flowers, I used the same alcohol ink and
just moved a little closer to give a more intense color spray!

Wow . . . this was a fun challenge . . . I knew exactly which picture I was going to use . . . then I had to find the paper!! I chose an older piece that I had to use as my background. I used a Heidi Swapp mask to create the title and then I put down the lovely Damask design from Tattered Angels (I got it free one day for buying a bottle of Glimmer Mist . . . how lucky am I?) Then I took it out on our patio and Glimmer Misted the heck out of it!!
I used a silver and a green color. Then I got out the rest of my Nikki Sivilis papers. I cut off the scalloped edge and distressed the heck out of it.
Then I ripped out a page of a random book that I had in my closet and inked it all up. I glued the edging down and then I “faux” stitched the design on the bottom of the “rows of hedges”. I adhered my book page and the photo (after I sanded the edges). Then I added the cute flocked flower brads and added some rub-ons and chipboard elements. I made a label to finish off the title.
My last step was to create the awesome butterflies. I stamped i butterfly on the background paper and then stamped the image onto another piece of cardstock. I clear embossed the images and then water colored the butterflies using my Tim Holtz Distress Inks. I added a button and bling to the center of each butterfly. I finally circled our ages in the number line and then drew a black line all the way round the layout! Finished layout!!
And our Guest Designer, Avina!
I have used a Buzz and Bloom chipboard as a mask and misted my white cardstock with some Glimmer mist. Then I cut some old Tres Jolies paper to match my photos in size. Next the corners were rounded and all these matted on a sheet of MME Ooh La La papers. All papers were lightly inked for definition. All this was finished off with a sprinkling of Robin’s Nest Dew Drops and journalling!
